This was the background for developing a new type of exam paper. We asked ourselves: how should an exam paper be made if the students had the use of a computer while making the student paper. We also wanted to strengthen the connection between the daily use of ICT for homework and the use of ICT at the final examination.
The result of the development work was to produce electronic exam papers based on a cd-rom. It is optional for the students whether they want to use the traditional exam paper or the electronic exam paper. We started in 2001 with subjects as Danish language, Maths and Business Economics and are in this year developing ICT-exam papers for Physics and English.
Our experiences are good and we believe this is the future for the exam papers. When the number of computers in schools are large enough we are ready to make this form compulsory in selected subjects. We are aware that it should not turn into a test of students ICT-skills, but still a test of their proficiency in the subject.
The ICT-exam papers in for example Danish language allow us to use various types of texts: the exam paper is no longer limited to containing only written texts, as now also other types of texts as pictures, advertisement, short films, videos, home pages or what we want are a possibility. The stu-dents may cut&paste from the cd-rom to the student paper and we supply the cd-rom with a kind of artificial internet with diverse background information so that the student may search for informa-tion and use it if they want to.
We have also developed a new kind of interdisciplinary exam paper for two subjects in our upper secondary business education, Business Economics and Marketing. It is a case-study on a cd-rom containing a portrait of a Danish enterprise including a large amount of information about the enterprise, interviews with keypersons, press releases, product information, accounts and other things. The students are allowed two days at home with the cd-rom for preparation and this is followed by an oral examination. There is no question paper included in the cd-rom – since the idea is that the student use methods and theories from the two subjects and should be able to identify the problems of the enterprise and suggest how to solve the problems. This implies that there is not just one correct answer, though of course some answers are better and more relevant than others. In this way we aim at testing the students’ understanding of the subjects and their ability to use theory instead of merely learning by heart. To test this with the same authenticity and complexity would be difficult without using ICT and cd-rom.
