ERNIST answers to teachers' questions
How can we bring research closer to the practitioners? This was one of the questions of the research strand in the Ernist project. The research team carried out research reviews on specific topics and questions about ICT in education. 12 authentic questions were answered based on the evidence in the research and are now made available to the user in various formats.

Starting from authentic questions asked by practitioners in what they need to know about ICT in education, the research team of the University of Helsinki and the University of Turku carried out systematic reviews of the existing research. These reviews covered 12 key exemplar areas of the use and added value of ICT in education. After an analysis of the original authentic question coming from practitioners, the answer was reformulated in such a way that they can be answered by the research evidence. Thus, the researcher helped in some cases to clarify the nature of the question asked by the user. A synthesis of the research based evidence was then drawn to give a clear answer to these questions. The review process of the evidence included criteria for the choice of studies. Conclusions or answers given are based on the evidence in the research.

A special format for the reviews was chosen to communicate the evidence to the user. The format of the reviews includes a short answer to the question. For those interested more in the topic, there is a link to the main references and the long answer as separate documents. The long answer contains the text, references and information about the review process.

The review process itself can also be accessed as a separate document. It includes the authentic question, its clarification and the elaborated question, the corpus of terms, literature search and criteria for inclusion. However, not in every review document all the listed elements are covered.

The following questions were answered by the research team:

1. What is good learning?
2. How does the teacher's work change (because of ICT)?
3. What are the benefits of mobile devices for learning?
4. How is ICT used in foreign language teaching?
5. How does the asynchronous nature of networked discussions affect communication?
6. How does one use ICT to motivate students?
7. Are multimedia/hypermedia programs useful for learning?
8. Are simulations useful for learning?
9. How does one use digital learning material efficiently?
10. Sound in multimedia and learning – What kind of added value couldsound bring?
11. How to Promote Students' Information Seeking?
12. How do students perceive ICT and its use in schools?
